General Lab Information

Welcome to the MIS Computer Lab!

The MIS lab is designed primarily for team assignments. The lab is exclusively available to students who are majoring and minoring in MIS. (Acceptance is defined as starting in IDSc 3201 or 3202.)

The MIS lab is accessible using your UCard. You will be added to the list through your MIS class. You will then be able to use the lab at anytime. The door will often be propped open for easier access. If you are the last person leaving the lab be sure to remove the doorstop so the door is closed when the lab is empty.

There are rules associated with the lab. For complete details, check the guidelines section. You should keep in mind that this lab is for students who are MIS majors and minors. You must not share the lab with non-majors; there are other lab facilities in the building for these students.

Your account settings in the lab travel (roam) with you. You may personalize your desktop and set up Outlook Express as your email client to securely save your correspondence (see section below). Your account includes storage space on the MIS server. This storage space will show up as a “U: drive” when you log in at the lab. You must keep the total amount of storage below 100MB. The MIS server administrator may delete selected files without warning from those who are using more than the specified amount of storage space.

You are welcome to use the shared printers in the lab. Each student may not use more than 250 pages each semester. Periodic audits of printer use suggest this is more than enough for the majority of students. Those using over the target may be lose their permission to print in the lab.

Finally, you are personally responsible for knowing the rules above and listed in the guidelines section.

First Time Logging On

  1. Enter your user name, your university X.500 (port0186 for Justin Porter).
  2. Enter your password (the default password for first-time log in is your student ID number)
  3. Select a new password when prompted
  4. If you are not asked for a new password, press Ctrl + Alt + Del and click the "new password" button
  5. For any other time, follow step 4 if you would like to change your password.

FTP Access to the Server

You have FTP access to the MIS server, which enables you to connect remotely using your username and password (only after your first lab login). Internet Explorer can be used to access your “U: drive” Use the following:

“ftp://<yourloginname>@misug.csom.umn.edu/classof<##>/student/<yourloginname>”

as the address and you will automatically be prompted for your password.

  • <yourloginname> = the login account for the MIS computer lab (usually your x500)
  • <classofxx> = depends on when you started IDSc 3201 (if you started 3201 in Fall 2004 then your class would be 2006 - "classof06" the class of assumes you will be done 2 years after taking IDSc 3201, even if you will graduate earlier)

You can also connect to the root ftp://<yourloginname>@misug.csom.umn.edu and then click through the directories.

Setting up Outlook Express

  1. Follow the instructions located at http://www.umn.edu/adcs/help/email/clients.html
